3 Twists on Thanksgiving Traditions

Traditions are a staple on Thanksgiving: Grandma always makes the mashed potatoes. Two tables are set up, one for the ‘kids’ and one for the adults. And the men watch football as the women finish last minute cooking and setting the table. The last one may have been a little sexist, but this is in a traditional sense. While generally everyone looks forward to Thanksgiving–the perfect marriage of food and family–it can become somewhat predictable. Here are three fun new things to try to make your Turkey Day even more festive.

1. Play Thanksgiving Charades

Create a list of all the things you and your family are thankful for. Put the things on small pieces of paper and place them in a hat or bag. Before dinner, go around the table and have each member pick something to act out. No talking! Try to guess what each family member is thankful for. If you don’t want to write a list for people to pick from have each family member think of something off of the top of their head. This fun game will warm you up before dinner and have your guts busting from laughter.

2. Mix Up the Seating

Do the same people always sit in the same place, next to the same people year after year. Try placing seating cards in new and random places so that different people sit next to each other. You can also just agree as a family to sit next to at least three different people throughout the meal, switching after appetizers and before desserts. Get the kids involved as well so that they can become acquainted with older relatives and vice versa!

3. Dance Party

Break away from the football game and break dance. Tune into a music station and bust a move. You will gain energy as you dance away your meal. Dancing is a fun activity for the whole family. Even better have a dance battle! Old v. Young. Men v. Women. Family v. Family. Let loose and have fun.
